KANSAS CITY – The Chiefs have had a leader on the defensive side of the ball for the past several years. A guy who has been the vocal, and emotional leader on that side of the ball since 2019, the Super Bowl season.

Tyrann Mathieu has not only been that for the Chiefs but also a dominant presence.

Unfortunately, the Chiefs and Mathieu parted ways. Mathieu is now a member of the New Orleans Saints, his hometown team.

With him gone, the Chiefs are now in dire need of a leader on the defense. However, it is still unclear who that may be.

Chiefs need a new leader, Spagnuolo confident

The Chiefs were able to go out and sign Justin Reid in the wake of Mathieu’s absence. However, Reid is not as known as a leader as Mathieu is. And that is no shot at Reid. Mathieu was just one of the best leaders in the league.

“We will just kind of look and see where it goes right now,” explained Steve Spagnuolo when asked about the leadership role.

“Some guys are natural and they step up… we will see where it goes. I think it’s going to take a little bit of time. We have had, I think today was the fifth OTA, but there are some positive signs. So hopefully it keeps going like that,” said Spagnuolo during a press conference.

The next thing for the Chiefs defense is finding that leader. Every team needs one, on both sides of the ball. Every team needs a Tyrann Mathieu on their defense.

Maybe that is Reid, or maybe it is someone who has been there for a while like Chris Jones. Personally, I would not be surprised if it’s a younger player who maybe got here after Mathieu was selected as captain of the defense.

Someone like Nick Bolton would be a great emotional captain for the Kansas City Chiefs. Either way, it sounds like they won’t have a lot of trouble finding the right guy for this role in 2022.
