Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went viral over the weekend and it had nothing to do with anything the former NFL MVP actually did.

On Sunday, during the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, a reporter mistook former Duke basketball player Paolo Banchero for Mahomes.

Check out the awkward exchange.

And here’s another view.

That’s a terrible moment for a reporter. I’ve made the same mistake before on a much smaller scale (I once thought I was interviewing a Tennessee Vols wide receiver, only to find out I was interviewing a freshman kicker after I’d asked several confusing questions). It’s embarrassing to say the least.

I’m sure the F1 reporter doesn’t cover many NFL or college basketball games, but you’d still think he could differentiate Mahomes from Banchero. Mahomes is one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet. And Banchero is not (at least not yet, maybe after he’s drafted into the NBA if he has a great start to his career).

Leave it to Mahomes to go viral by doing nothing at all.
