I don’t know if it was on purpose or not, but New York Giants quarterback Davis Webb seemingly threw some shade at Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes this week.

Webb told the New York Post that Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who just had his fifth-year option declined, is probably the smartest quarterback he’s ever played with.

Mahomes and Webb were teammates together at Texas Tech.

For this to be shade, I guess it really depends on what kind of “smart” Webb is talking about. If we’re talking purely about football, there’s no question that it’s shade. Mahomes is undoubtedly the smarter quarterback — just look at the results.

If we’re just talking about intelligence in general, well that’s a bit more subjective. Jones graduated from Duke with a degree in economics. He’s obviously a smart guy.

But let’s not shortchange Mahomes. He’s one of the savviest investors in the NFL. Sure, he’s made a lot of money thanks to his mega-contract and lucrative endorsements, but he’s been incredibly wise with that money.

I’m sure this is just Webb giving his teammate some love, but it certainly feels like it was a shortsighted statement.

Then again, maybe Webb is still bitter about Mahomes about beating him out for the starting quarterback job at Texas Tech.
