While Chiefs fans have been spoiled the last four years with Patrick Mahomes at the helm, that spoiling is crashing down. So much so, that Mahomes played maybe the worst game of his career against the Tennessee Titans.
The struggles this year have been loud, and the whole league, and its fans, are enamored by the idea of Kansas City losing. At this point, the Chiefs are against the whole league. However, when you win so much in such a short time, people will get jealous, look at the patriots over the last decade.
No, I am not comparing the two, because New England never really had a start to a season like this one. However, the Chiefs have had a wild amount of success over the last four years, and for that reason, they are hated.
For other reasons, the Chiefs are struggling. Yes, the defense is horrible. Yes, the offense is bad at times. But, the Chiefs main reason for struggling comes from the man himself.
Patrick Mahomes takes blame for Chiefs struggles
The half-billion-dollar man himself is not having his best season. Of course, when you break records your first year starting in the league, it is kind of hard to do that every year.
This is unfamiliar territory for the Chiefs, their fans, and especially Patrick Mahomes, who has won since being in the NFL. The former MVP, and Super Bowl MVP, has not been himself, and here is what he had to say about the Chiefs recent struggles:
“You can just watch the tape and know I need to play better in order to have success…”
Prior to that, Mahomes was asked if head coach Andy Reid has talked to him about his play, and Mahomes said this:
“He is always giving me things to work on, and he did that this week… I have to find a way to play better, so our offense can get going.”
It seems as if Mahomes is shouldering much of the blame for the offense’s struggles, which is what a leader should do. But he is also giving credit to opposing teams defenses:
“Yeah, I mean you can’t take anything away from what defenses have done against us, they have played us well, they have done great things that have limited us to a certain extent, I think if we execute and do what we think we can do, we can still go out there and get what we want.”
While Mahomes is taking some of the blame, it seems as if he is still very confident in this offense, as he should be. It will be interesting to see how they respond against the New York Giants this Monday night.
