If your fantasy football league is about to have a draft, it will probably be massively impacted by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
This is the time of year when training camp updates turn into fantasy football hype for certain players. Most of the time, the training camp hype doesn’t equate to regular season success.
Sometimes, though, the hype leads to one of those training camp studs having a breakout season. It’s kind of like hitting a great golf shot. Hitting on just one summer fantasy football sleeper can erase the memory of a hundred misses (just like that great golf shot makes you forget about all the bad ones that proceeded it).
Mahomes is going to be responsible for an unexpected player getting a ton of hype this summer. And that’s going to mean that player will be drafted higher than expected in fantasy drafts.
So who is that player?
It’s one of the Chiefs’ offseason additions, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
The former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver is already turning heads at Chiefs training camp thanks to his connection with Mahomes.
It seemed Patrick Mahomes’ receiver of choice during OTAs was Marquez Valdez-Scantling, and he’s had some catches here — but through two days, it’s been JuJu Smith-Schuster making the big plays.— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 28, 2022
I have a feeling these Patrick Mahomes ➡️ Juju Smith-Schuster touchdowns will be happening quite a bit this year pic.twitter.com/R8mK24QudL— Nathalie Jones (@NathalieJonesTV) July 28, 2022
With Tyreek Hill no longer on the roster, Mahomes will need a top wide receiver target to step up. So far, it sounds like Smith-Schuster could turn into his favorite target (outside of tight end Travis Kelce). If that ends up being the case, then Smith-Schuster could easily be one of the top fantasy wide receivers in 2022.
That potential is why I think you’ll see him getting drafted way earlier than expected in fantasy football drafts over the next couple of weeks. The Mahomes effect is real. Rolling with the Chiefs’ offense is usually a good way to find fantasy football success.
Kansas City is always going to put points on the board with Mahomes under center. And there’s a good chance that Smith-Schuster will be responsible for a lot of those points.
