The biggest unknown when it comes to the future of the Nashville Predators is clear right now. Will they extend or trade star forward Filip Forsberg? It seems like those are the only two options right now because they cannot afford to let him walk for nothing this off-season. A report surfaced last week that the Preds were actively shopping their top goal scorer. Although, it sounds like both sides are still interested in trying to make an extension happen.

Forsberg interested in staying in Nashville

This sounds like Forsberg does want to remain a Pred, but he and his agent also know his value. Many teams would be very interested in his talent in free agency and at this year’s trade deadline. The fan favorite also knows that both sides will have to work together to compromise in order to make the best deal all-around.

David Poile says he is not trying to trade Forsberg

This is a telling comment from Poile, who is usually pretty air-tight about potential moves. It seems like he knows the immense production the team would lose if they were to move on from Forsberg. The GM is determined to get a deal done, apparently, but both sides have to make it work.

All in all, the Predators cannot lose their best offensive threat for nothing in free agency. Their best option is to lock him up long-term because you need to keep your best players in the building even if that sacrifices some of your other talent. If that for some reason cannot happen by the middle of March, then the only option is to trade him. Losing your top goal scorer and a fan-favorite would absolutely kill team and fan morale, though. We shouldn’t forget that this team currently holds a playoff spot.
