Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill has an opportunity to exorcise his demons on Sunday with the visiting Cincinnati Bengals making a return to Nashville.

Though Titans fans won’t soon forget Tannehill tossing three interceptions in a devastating loss in last season’s AFC Divisional Round, he is presented with a shot at redemption. In order to get a taste of redemption, Tannehill must first conquer his Boogeyman.

Bengals safety Jessie Bates has caused plenty of chaos in Cincinnati’s secondary, playing in his fifth season in the NFL. But Bates has been quite the thorn in Tannehill’s side over the years.

Tannehill has squared off with Bates on three occasions. Bates has made Tannehill’s life miserable in all three meetings.

Bates has tallied three interceptions against the Titans’ signal caller, though one of those came when Tannehill was playing for the Miami Dolphins in 2018. However, turnovers don’t tell the full story as to why Bates is one of Tannehill’s worst nightmares.

Tannehill has targeted Bates six times, but has only managed to complete two passes for a total of nine yards allowed. That adds up to a passer rating of 2.8.

With two interceptions on the season, Bates is looking to add to his total this weekend.

While Tannehill’s numbers are grotesque, it doesn’t mean that he should avoid Bates at all costs. He must be judicious with where he goes with the football, accounting for Bates’ presence at all times.

The Titans are extremely difficult to beat when the offense takes care of the ball. With a win, Tannehill will be able to shed the weight of that 1,000-pound gorilla that has been clinging to his back since January.
