247Sports revealed their updated 2021 bowl game projections this week and they have the Tennessee Vols playing past the regular season.

According to 247Sports’ projections, the Vols will play in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte against Florida State.

If Tennessee reaches the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, which was previously named the Belk Bowl, it will likely mean that UT finished the season unranked with six or seven regular-season wins (only three ranked teams have played in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in the last 10 years).

A matchup between Tennessee and Florida State would be the first meeting between the two programs since the Vols took down the Seminoles in the Fiesta Bowl in early 1999 to claim the first BCS championship.

While a bowl game projection is encouraging for Tennessee, it’s unlikely the Volunteers will actually reach a bowl game in 2021.

Tennessee might end up winning enough games to qualify, but the pending recruiting investigation and looming penalties will probably lead to at least a one-year bowl ban for the Vols.
