The New Orleans Saints received some unexpected good news on Monday.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Saints feel as though rookie offensive lineman Trevor Penning has a chance to return to the field by November.
Penning, the No. 19 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, is sidelined after undergoing foot surgery last month. The previous feeling was that Penning would miss the entire season.
The #Saints received unexpectedly good news following the foot surgery for first-round OT Trevor Penning: Rather than miss all of 2022, Penning has a chance to be ready by early Nov., sources say. At the least, he'll be able to practice, at the most could be key down the stretch.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 5, 2022
That’s tremendously good news for the Saints. Penning is a bulldozer who plays the game with an attitude that can best be described as “nasty”. He has the look of a tackle that could anchor the New Orleans offensive line for years to come.
The Saints have a legitimate chance to make some noise in the NFC South this season. Getting Penning back late in the season — a time when depth will be needed — could be what pushes New Orleans over the top in 2022.
