The Philadelphia Eagles offense is expected to be one of the NFL’s most exciting offenses in 2022, but the unit was without two of its key players on Thursday as starting wide receiver DeVonta Smith and starting left tackle Jordan Mailata missed practice.
Smith is considered day-to-day with a groin injury and Mailata is currently in concussion protocol. Smith’s injury occurred during Tuesday’s session. Smith is considered day-to-day and it obviously remains to be seen how long Mailata will be out.
Those two weren’t the only players to miss practice. Rookie tight end Grant Calcaterra did not participate and neither did the trio of backup left tackle Andre Dillard, Mac McCain, and Greg Ward.
#Eagles practice report:— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) August 4, 2022
WILL NOT PRACTICE
Grant Calcaterra – hamstring
Andre Dillard – concussion
Jordan Mailata – concussion
Mac McCain – knee
DeVonta Smith – groin
Greg Ward – toe
Zach Pascal – illness
It’s good that Smith’s injury is considered to be of the day-to-day variety, but if you’ve followed football long enough, you know how fickle soft tissue injuries can be. Especially for wide receivers like Smith, who rely on sudden, precise movements to be effective.
The same goes for Mailata. Concussions can be very fickle and, Mailata’s evaluation will come from an independent source. Meaning, his availability will be completely out of his -and the team’s- control.
Regardless, it’ll be something to certainly monitor as the Eagles inch closer toward the season.
