The Philadelphia Eagles could have had a big problem on their hands, but it’s looking like it will be fixed pretty soon before that problem starts getting out of hand.
What is that problem? Well, safety, or defensive back, depth. Yeah, the Eagles are deep at safety. They are deep at really every position. But they have had two of their key players out at that position. And play at the position by the depth pieces.
So, there was a problem starting to form on their hands.
Everyone watched the game against the Green Bay Packers, right? When undrafted rookie Reed Blankenship got an interception on Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, that was a great moment, and one of the better moments of this season for the Eagles.
But, even in that game, and in the Titans game, Blankenship wasn’t amazing, to say the least. He has shown flashes of some big plays, but ultimately the bad things are showing over the good.
It’s a problem that could start to get big, especially since the Eagles have had C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Avonte Maddox out.
But, on Wednesday news broke that the Eagles were actually activating Maddox, which could help the Eagles secondary problems that may start forming.
According to Zach Berman, who covers the Eagles for The Athletic, Maddox will be on the practice field Wednesday-Friday, and could play some Sunday barring any setbacks with the hamstring.
Blankenship could be a very good player, but, in my opinion he isn’t there yet. He gets beat in coverage far too often, and just doesn’t have that speed that Maddox or Gardner-Johnson have.
Maddox has experience, and while he isn’t a top name in the league, he is easily a serviceable safety.
Eventually the play of the backups in the secondary was going to be a problem. It wasn’t yet, but it would have been one eventually. Luckily, Maddox is coming back.
