And he hated the Steelers.
Freiermuth revealed his childhood fandom on Thursday while meeting with reporters ahead of the Steelers’ matchup this weekend with…the Patriots.
Don’t worry Steelers, fans. He’s happy to be in Pittsburgh. And he’s anxious to beat the Patriots.
Pat Freiermuth: “I loved the Patriots. They were my team. But I’m looking forward to taking it to them on Sunday, Gronk was my guy. Tom Brady was my guy. All of them. It is pretty cool to play them. It really is.” #Steelers #NFL— Steelers Depot 7⃣ (@Steelersdepot) September 15, 2022
This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Freiermuth is from Massachusetts and he was born in 1998 — he had no choice but to grow up a Patriots fan.
Combine that with New England and Pittsburgh playing some intense games in the 2000s and you can certainly see how he ended up hating the Steelers.
This probably happens all the time in sports. I’ve obviously never been a pro athlete, but I’ve always wondered what the psyche is like for a die-hard fan to go play for a team that he grew up rooting against.
I guess when you’re getting paid a ton of cash it’s easy to forget about childhood fandom.
