Pittsburgh Steelers star defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick got a rare unsportsmanlike penalty against the Cincinnati Bengals in week one of the 2022 season.

It was the only blip on the radar for Fitzpatrick on a day where he pretty much dominated the Bengals.

On Thursday, Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was asked about the penalty and whether or not he feels the need to reel in Fitzpatrick from time to time.

Austin quickly shot down that idea.

“I’m not gonna slow that guy down,” said Austin. “He is not a guy that gets a lot of penalties. He’s not a guy that plays dirty. There’s no way I’m slowing him down.”

You have to love that answer from Austin if you’re a Steelers fan. The minute you try to “slow a guy down” or alter the way they play — especially a safety — you take away one of their biggest weapons.

I’m sure Fitzpatrick will get another penalty or two this season for a late hit or unnecessary roughness. It happens a lot these days with the strict NFL rules for defenders. But he’ll more than make up for those couple of penalties with the highlight reel-worthy plays he makes on a routine basis.
