The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky to serve as the franchise’s starting quarterback in 2022, but it’s possible that the former North Carolina Tar Heel doesn’t start in the Steel City this season.

That’s because the Steelers also drafted Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett (No. 20 overall). And there’s a chance that Pickett wins the starting job this summer.

If that happens, it sounds like Pickett and rookie wide receiver Calvin Austin III will be on the same page.

Austin, who was selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, gave his thoughts on Pickett this week. And the former Memphis standout made it clear that he’s a big fan of Pickett. Austin told reporters this week that Pickett “can throw it”.

Pittsburgh clearly has high hopes for Pickett, but I don’t think it would be wise for them to count on the rookie to be the starter in 2022.

I can see a scenario where Pickett finishes the season as the starter, but I think it will be Trubisky to start the season. It’s just hard to imagine Pickett winning the job during training camp, even though he was the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft.

The good news for the Steelers is that it sounds like whenever Pickett does win the job, he’ll already have great chemistry with Austin and the other wide receivers.
