It was weird enough watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4) lose by 18-points to the Carolina Panthers (2-5), but things got weirder after the game when Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans was seen interacting with two referees after the game.

Based off the video footage, it looks like Evans was signing autographs for the two officials, which is obviously awful optics for the unbiased viewer. This scene led many to question Evans’ potential relationship with the refs.

And, even though the Buccaneers lost, 21-3, it’s safe to assume several antennas were raised by the thought of some sort of underhanded dealing(s) between the parties.

Well, apparently the video was enough to prompt the NFL to investigate the situation in order to make sure there were no improprieties concerning the matter.

On Tuesday, NFL Network‘s Tom Pelissero released the NFL’s findings.

Pelissero went on to clarify that one of the referees, Jeff Lamberth, both went to Texas A&M and Lamberth was giving Evans’ a golf pro’s number in order for said pro to give Evans lessons.

At the end of the day, it’s an innocuous situation that resulted in nothing but bad optics.

It’s just more proof that you can’t read too much into anything on social media.
