The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-4) have to quickly forget about their awful loss to the Carolina Panthers because they have a game on Thursday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens (4-3).
Stopping former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson won’t be an easy task, especially on a short week. Which is why Todd Bowles’ update on safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is so disappointing.
“Winfield has a concussion, so he’ll be in the protocol and will likely be out,” Bowles told reporters on Monday.
Winfield Jr. is a key piece on a Buccaneers defense that is also missing starting safety Logan Ryan, starting cornerback Carlton Davis III, starting defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, and a reserve player in Sean Murphy-Bunting.
But of all of those names, Winfield Jr.’s stands out the most. He’s the Buccaneers’ nickel and is an extremely versatile player that can cover, play the box, blitz, and do whatever else is needed of him.
Bowles also provided an update on wideout Russell Gage, who continues to have hamstring issues.
“Russell’s gotta get his MRI back, so we’ll see what happens there,” said Bowles.
Winfield Jr. missed last year’s contest with the Philadelphia Eagles because of a concussion and that just so happened to be on a short week, as well.
But 2022 has obviously been an entirely different animal than what this Buccaneers team expected, so it’s far from guaranteed this year’s Thursday night matchup ends in the same fashion.
