NFL Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears legend Dick Butkus has passed away per the Bears. He was 80 years old. The Butkus family has put out this statement on his passing.
“The Butkus family confirms that football and entertainment legend Dick Butkus died peacefully in his sleep overnight at home in Malibu, California.
The Butkus family is gathering with Dick’s wife Helen. They appreciate your prayers and support. Additional information will be provided when it is available.”
Butkus played in the NFL from 1965 to 1973. He was a two time Defensive Player of the Year, eight time All-Pro, eight time Pro Bowler and part of the NFL's 100th anniversary team. Those are just a few of the many accolades that Butkus achieved as a player.
After playing the game, Butkus became a commentator and an actor. He was present on social media up until the very end. This was Butkus last month at Solider Field ahead of the Bears home opener.
Butkus will be remembered for his contributions to the game and everything that he brought to the Bears organization.
