The Chicago Bears search for their next offensive coordinator continues on Thursday with another interview expected to be on the way.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Bears are planning to interview San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak for their open offensive coordinator position.
Kubiak is the second confirmed name revealed on the Bears search for their next offensive play caller after moving on from Luke Getsy earlier this week.
Who is Klint Kubiak?
Kubiak is the oldest son of former Super Bowl winning head coach Gary Kubiak. The 36-year-old is a rising mind among offensive assistants in the NFL and already has prior experience in the role. Kubiak spent one season as the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Zimmer in 2021.
Under Kubiak's offense, Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins threw 33 touchdown passes and 7 interceptions on the season while wide receiver Justin Jefferson recorded a career-high 10 touchdowns along with 1,616 yards. The Vikings offensive spark fell short of expectations as the team finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs.
Zimmer and his staff were dismissed following the season resulting in Kubiak joining the Denver Broncos staff as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator under head coach Nathaniel Hackett. The season was viewed as a major disappointment after quarterback Russell Wilson threw for just 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his first year in Denver. The bulk of the staff was let go following the season.
Kubiak landed back on his feet, however, taking on a role as the 49ers passing game coordinator under head coach Kyle Shanahan. Many believe after spending a full season under Shanahan's wing, Kubiak is ready to once again call his own offense.
2023 Resume
As part of Shanahan's offensive staff in 2023, the 49ers produced five offensive Pro Bowlers, including second-year quarterback Brock Purdy who dominated the MVP conversation throughout the majority of the season. Purdy finished the season leading the NFL with a 113.0 passer rating.
The 49ers offense featured multiple explosive weapons such as running back and Offensive Player of the Year front-runner Christian MCcaffrey, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, along with tight end George Kittle.
Aiyuk and Kittle were one of four duos in the NFL to each record 1,000 receiving yards in 2023. Samuel had 1,117 scrimmage yards and 12 scrimmage touchdowns. McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards 21 total touchdowns.
A lot of the credit for the offense's success in 2023 should of course go to Shanahan, but Kubiak's role was also beneficial to the entire staff. Kubiak has 10 years of NFL coaching experience under his belt and is ready for another shot as offensive coordinator. Will it potentially be in Chicago?
