The Indianapolis Colts recent signing turned some heads around the league.

They announced the signing of former Denver Broncos 2nd-round pick K.J. Hamler to their practice squad.

This signing of Hamler doesn't seem like the usual late September signing. The former 2nd round pick had shown solid promise with the Broncos before stepping away from football after being diagnosed with pericarditis. After spending this offseason working through his personal health, he has officially returned to the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts first worked out Hamler earlier this month and now have signed the WR. While he was signed to the Colts practice squad, this move seems to be preparing for him to be signed to the team's active roster. The Colts took a similar approach recently when they signed RB Trey Sermon to their practice squad and, after getting him accustomed, quickly moved him to their active roster.

A difference from the Sermon move, though, would be I don't think any of the Colts current four WRs are in danger of being released. Hamler will likely become the WR 5 for the team, which would mean a roster move will be made elsewhere to get Hamler activated. That is something to watch for next week.
