In just his first year as the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey is drawing attention for a head coach opening.
While many expected defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier to get looks first thanks to his impressive work on defense, it’s Dorsey the first name the Bills get asked about. A surprise without a doubt.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Carolina Panthers have requested an interview with the first-year OC. The NFC South team also requested interviews with other offensive coaches, including the Detroit Lions' Ben Johnson.
The Bills OC has done quite a decent job this season filling in for Brian Daboll, who departed to New York last offseason. Perhaps Daboll's own success with the Giants (who are going to the playoffs in Daboll's first year as HC) is playing a role in the Panthers' interest.
Or perhaps it's Dorsey's experience working with Josh Allen in his development. The Panthers don't have a clear plan at quarterback for the future but Dorsey's experience in that area can be attractive to NFL front offices.
Not to mention, NFL teams looking for head coaches are seemingly prioritizing offensive-minded franchise builders. Winning in the league is tough without a top-tier offense in today's game which has paved the way for many young offensive coaches.
If the Panthers decide to stick with a defensive-minded coach, they could stick with Steve Wilks at HC for one more year. Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the decision to interview offensive coordinators comes as a result of that.
Ultimately, success in the league attracts interest. That's why the Bills front office is already drawing interest as well.
Expect Frazier and Dorsey to continue to draw interest over the next few weeks as franchises figure out what they want to do with their vacant HC jobs.
