Ladies and gentlemen, it's Pro Bowl week and that means one thing and one thing only. It's alternates season!

Every year, many players around the league benefit from replacing players who decline to attend the Pro Bowl for a variety of reasons. This season, as you've probably heard by now, the Buffalo Bills are sending three alternates to the multi-day event that will include many more competitions.

It will also feature a football flag game instead of the traditional game that had players playing with 25% effort.

Including the alternates, the Bills will have a historic mark of eight Bills players in the Pro Bowl. You can read about them here.

And while that should be celebrated, I won't lie.

I scratched my head at the invitation received by Bills OL Rodger Saffold. That one took me off guard. He will be replacing the injured Quenton Nelson, for what it's worth.

The Bills left guard is a good dude and will be an interesting player to watch when free agency kicks off later this year. But never in a million years would I have thought he was Pro Bowl bound.

This season, he wasn't good. In fact, he was a weak spot for the Bills offensive line. He finished the season with the worst Pro Football Focus' blocking grade on the team. He allowed the second-most pressures and had the second-most penalties.

He wasn't great compared with other guards around the league, either.

While I don't mean to pile on Saffold, who's had an impressive career and provided the Bills with a much-needed short-term answer at guard, it sets things up interestingly heading into free agency.

All of the sudden, it's two-time Pro Bowler Rodger Saffold (in consecutive seasons, too). Will that translate into a higher price tag come negotiation time? We'll find out.

But his second Pro Bowl doesn't really reflect the type of season he had in Buffalo.
