Before the Dallas Cowboys traded for WR Brandin Cooks earlier this week, you couldn't get through a day of coverage without hearing about Odell Beckham Jr. or DeAndre Hopkins.

Both have yet to land with a new team. That paired with Hopkins staying in the Dallas area has Cowboys fans wondering if the team could double down and trade for not one but two standout wideouts.

If the price is right, why not pursue a Lamb-Cooks-Hopkins starting trio in an all-in year? I mean, that sounds as close as you can get to an NFL version of basketball's "Big 3," right?

And I'll give it to you. On paper, it sounds great.

Even more so because Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer recently reported that the trade compensation for Hopkins might be closer to what Dallas paid for Cooks than a second-round pick:

I don’t think it’ll be what they wanted initially. The ask had been a second-round pick and another asset. Based on indications I’ve gotten, that sort of return simply isn’t coming. I do think he’ll bring back more than Brandin Cooks did for the Texans—Houston got a 2023 fifth-rounder and ’24 sixth-rounder for him from the Cowboys—but it’ll probably be closer to that than what Arizona is looking for.

Could the front office look at getting rid of a Day 3 pick to land another big-time weapon on offense? They've already dealt three of them away while getting Cooks and CB Stephon Gilmore.

But don't expect the Cowboys to actually do something like it. Let's look at the evidence.

Former NFL player Adam "Pacman" Jones said on the Pat McAfee Show that his "source(s)" indicated that five teams were in the running for the three-time First-Team All-Pro: Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, and the New England Patriots.

He also added that Hopkins "definitely wants to win and get a shot."

Not only were the Cowboys not mentioned on Jones' list (and there aren't any other reports listing them) but it's clear there might be enough of a bidding war for the wide receiver for Stephen Jones & Co. to fold.

Making a trade for Hopkins seem even more unlikely is a recent report from KPRC2's Aaron Wilson that indicates the Kansas City Chiefs are out on the sweepstakes due to "financial expectations."

The Cowboys are already set to pay Cooks $12 million in 2023 and another $8 million next year. Hopkins is due $19.5 million this year. Even if the Cardinals agree to take on some of that, it's tough to envision the Cowboys pulling the trigger.

Keep in mind, they also restructured Michael Gallup's deal earlier in the offseason which suggests they're bullish on his future even after a disappointing year.

So even though Hopkins remains in the Dallas area and the Cowboys are still being linked to him, don't expect anything to happen on that front. And if it does, let it be a pleasant surprise.

Right now, the Cowboys wide receiver room appears to be mostly set from here until the 2023 NFL Draft.
