When the Dallas Cowboys report to training camp on July 24th, it'll be the last chance for some players to prove they belong on the team's 53-man roster.
With the pads on, there will be no room for excuses as battles finally play out the way fans yearn for in OTAs and minicamps. However, that's not to say we're walking away from the mandatory minicamp without a list of winners and a list of losers.
Here are three players from the Cowboys whose stocks dropped in minicamp.
1. CB Jourdan Lewis
For the record, I still think Lewis makes the 53-man roster when it's all said and done. But there's no denying his seat is quickly warming up. After two seasons starting at nickel for the Cowboys, Lewis suffered a season-ending injury in Week 7 last year.
The injury represented an opportunity for DaRon Bland that didn't go to waste. The fifth-rounder put together an outstanding year as a rookie and is now projected as the starter at nickel going into his second year in the NFL.
On top of Bland's quick rise, Lewis is now battling Kelvin Joseph, too. The former second-round draft pick moved inside and is playing his best football since he got to Dallas, per head coach Mike McCarthy.
I believe Lewis to be a better nickel cornerback than Joseph but the latter has grown into somewhat of a special teams ace and is younger and healthier. On the contrary, Lewis is expected to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Being on the hot seat and not being able to remind coaches what you're capable of because of an injury is never an ideal spot to be in.
2. CB Nahshon Wright
Wright is another player who we haven't heard much about. His play was disappointing when he finally saw the playing field last year and he was one of the reasons why we witnessed a CB carousel late in the year.
With the Cowboys trading for Stephon Gilmore and adding Eric Scott Jr. in the sixth round, Wright is looking like the likeliest odd man out as he missed time with what could be an undisclosed injury.
3. OL Josh Ball
Matt Waletzko appears to be on the rise just as much as Ball's stock is in a steep decline. Since the moment the Cowboys revealed they were working him inside, it was a sign that Ball was officially on the hot seat.
Waletzko isn't the only one who could cause Ball some trouble in terms of earning a spot on the roster. Also joining the team are rookie Asim Richards, free agent Chuma Edoga and even UDFA Earl Bostick Jr. could complicate things for Ball.
His seat is as hot as it's ever been and is a prime cut candidate for the Cowboys headed into training camp.
