At this point, the Detroit Lions trading running back D'Andre Swift seems much more like a question of 'when' rather than 'if.'
Taking a running back like Jahmyr Gibbs so early in the first round and signing a veteran back like David Montgomery says a lot about what the Lions want this depth chart to look like when the regular season starts.
Based on everything we've seen, Swift's time should be up, and it is time to start looking at where he can land. Here are the three best destinations for the young back:
1. Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles make a ton of sense for both parties. For starters, Philly missed out on the top two backs in the first round (not that they did poorly or even needed a back that bad) and they do still have a need on a roster with a lot of quality depth guys.
Assuming the Eagles would like someone that has a bit more experience and upside than a Kenneth Gainwell or Boston Scott, Philly has the money and the roster space to make this work. Plus, Swift would go from a playoff hopefully to a team that is likely going to make the playoffs consistently for a long time to come, so it shouldn't be a hard sell for him.
2. Cleveland Browns: The Cleveland Browns might be one of the best teams in the NFL to be the RB2 on. Kareem Hunt got a mountain of touches as a rusher and as a pass-catcher behind one of the best backs in the NFL, and based on the current ambiguity of that situation, the Browns will have a need.
The Browns currently have less capital than a team like the Eagles, but it makes sense that they would like to go after a vested option with one of their later picks if it proves to be a safer bet than taking a chance in the draft.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Buccaneers currently have one of the worst running back rooms in the NFL. Rachaad White looks like the RB1. Everything beyond that is currently up in the air.
The Bucs can draft another unproven back in one of the middle rounds (a move that they have little success with) or they can trade for a guy like Swift to compete with White for the RB1 role. The choice there seems pretty simple.
