WR Zay Flowers is the MOST COMPLETE WR in this class: NFL Draft Film Breakdown
In this film breakdown, we take a look at a projected 1st round WR, in Zay Flowers.
Flowers was very productive at Boston College, and continued to fly up draft boards this season, despite measuring in at 5'9 182 lbs. His stock has consistently risen due to his exceptional route-running and route tree, something that makes him unique in a fairly weak WR class. His movements are sudden and explosive, giving him the ability to separate from a defender at a moment's notice. Flowers proved at BC that he can be a very good deep threat, despite also running short and intermediate routes very well. His biggest weakness in my mind is his consistency with the ball. He flashes great ball skills, yet still struggles with drops at times.
Strengths:
- Speed and quickness: Wide receivers typically need to be fast and agile to run routes and evade defenders. Zay Flowers is known for his ability to accelerate quickly and make sharp cuts, which can make him difficult to cover.
- Route running: A good wide receiver should be able to run precise routes and create separation from defenders. Zay Flowers has been praised for his route-running ability, with scouts noting his crisp footwork and ability to change direction smoothly.
- Hands and catch radius: Wide receivers need to have strong hands and the ability to catch passes in tight spaces. Zay Flowers has shown the ability to make tough catches and extend his arms to snag balls that other receivers might miss.
Weaknesses:
- Size and strength: While size isn't always a limiting factor for wide receivers, some players may struggle to compete against larger defenders. At 5'11" and 170 pounds, Zay Flowers is smaller than many NFL wideouts, which could make it harder for him to win contested catches and hold up against physical defenders.
- Blocking: Wide receivers are expected to contribute in the running game by making blocks downfield, but this is an area where Zay Flowers may need to improve. Scouts have noted that he can be hesitant to engage defenders and may not have the strength to sustain blocks.
- Consistency: As with any young player, Zay Flowers may struggle with consistency at times. He has shown flashes of brilliance on the field, but also had games where he has been relatively quiet. Developing greater consistency in his performance will be key to his success at the college level and beyond.
