The Tennessee Titans officially have their new GM.
After firing Jon Robinson late in the season, they have their replacement. The Titans are hiring 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon to be their new general manager.
Carthon's now-former team is still playing in the postseason on the NFC side. His work, along with the rest of the front office for the 49ers, has been instrumental in building one of the best teams in the NFL.
San Francisco has impressive depth and top-end talent on both sides of the football. For the Titans, they hope that Carthon can bring that sort of improvement to the roster in Tennessee.
In particular, two positions could see a major boost with Carthon in the front office.
They are two positions of need for the Titans, too. Offensive line and defensive back both are strengths for their new general manager.
Both spots could be investments of interest for the Titans early in the 2023 NFL Draft as well as free agency.
The Titans' offensive line struggled mightily this season, and injuries didn't help that. Regardless of their decision on Taylor Lewan, Tennessee needs at least one impact starter at offensive tackle during this off-season.
They'll have important decisions to make about the interior OL as well, but fans should trust Carthon. His pedigree in the NFL Draft regarding offensive line is pretty strong.
That was true during his time with both the Los Angeles Rams and 49ers over the past decade. He has helped teams hit on multiple important picks on the OL, and he is bringing that skill to the Titans.
On defense, defensive backs were the 49ers' bread and butter in mid-to-late rounds of the draft.
Carthon probably played an important role in that. The 49ers drafted DB Ambry Thomas late in the third round in 2021. In 2018, San Francisco took CB D.J. Reed at pick 142, and he has turned into a solid player over the past couple of seasons.
CB Ahkello Weatherspoon is another great example as he was a third-round pick in 2017 for the Niners. He was a starter for them for a good portion of his time there.
With the Rams, Jackrabbit Jenkins and Lamarcus Joyner were a couple of DB picks in the second round that were important to those defenses.
Overall, Carthon has proven that he can pack a punch to the drafting for the Titans. This off-season will be a massive one for the Titans, and they trust him to help steer the ship.
