Tennessee Vols athletic director Danny White has mostly stayed above the fray since arriving in Knoxville in early 2021.
But on Friday afternoon, White took to Twitter to absolutely torch the Auburn Tigers.
Here's the backstory:
Various reports indicated on Friday that Allen Greene is "stepping away" from his role as the Auburn athletic director. It was always expected that Greene wouldn't be back after this year, but his exit was expedited over concerns about the renewal of his contract.
The decision was announced after the two sides negotiated terms of Greene's departure earlier in the day, sources told ESPN.
"The decision to step away from Auburn athletics is not an easy one, but it is the right time for me to begin the next step in my professional journey," Greene said in a statement released by the school. "I am very proud of the work that we have done together to move our athletics program forward.
"… I wish Auburn nothing but the best in the years ahead. I'm confident we leave Auburn athletics stronger than when we arrived."
Greene was entering the final five months of his contract, which is a rarity among athletic directors at major conference schools. Greene had asked Auburn for clarity about his future with his deal expiring in January, sources told ESPN, and he was told that Auburn was likely to wait until the end of football season to make a decision.
Auburn famously has a ridiculous amount of booster meddling in athletics, making it an undesirable job to many.
White tweeted his support for Greene on Friday afternoon while calling the situation at Auburn "crazy".
Green worked under White when White served as the athletic director at Buffalo. The two also worked together at Ole Miss.
White's father, Kevin, also took a shot at Auburn.
That's not a side of Danny White that we've seen so far, but I think Vols fans will appreciate it. White keeps it classy, but he's not afraid to mix it up every now and then.
Though I have to wonder, what happened to texting your buddies about a situation, Danny? That was the advice he had for Vols fans when he took over for Phillip Fulmer early last year.
I'm only kidding, Danny. Feel free to throw shade at opposing SEC programs any time you like. I guarantee that Tennessee fans will love you for it.
