Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Gerald Mincey apologized over the weekend for his actions during UT's win against Ball State.

Mincey, who transferred to Tennessee from Florida this offseason, appeared to sign an autograph during the middle of the game.

Mincey apologized for the moment via his Twitter account.

I didn't think an apology was necessary. That seemed like an innocuous moment.

Nothing about it was premeditated. Mincey was celebrating with fans when out of nowhere there was a shoe and a sharpie in his face. He quickly "autographed" the shoe and moved on.

At that moment, with the adrenaline going, it would be tough for any athlete — college or professional — to take stock of the situation and refrain from grabbing the sharpie.

I applaud Mincey for apologizing — it's clear he's a great kid — but I don't think it was needed at all.
