After 13 years in the NFL, New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty hung up his cleats following the 2022 season, and it was a move that surprised his brother.
Jason McCourty also played for 13 years, but retired one year prior and was shocked that his brother didn't attempt to outlast him by one year.
"We've been competitive our whole careers. I thought for sure you weren't going to retire this year just to play one more year than me," Jason McCourty said to his brother on Good Morning Football.
"I thought about it," Devin McCourty said in response. "I felt, before the season started, I have to go 14 just so we're not the same. But then we went 8-9, kind of looked at the division, rumors Aaron Rodgers was coming. I was like, year 14 doesn't sound that exciting."
While Devin McCourty spent his entire career with the Patriots, Jason McCourty bounced around to different teams, including a three-year stay in New England.
And with that competition, Devin McCourty made sure to bring up that he won three Super Bowls throughout his career, while Jason McCourty won one during the 2018 season while he played alongside his brother with the Patriots.
Along with retiring after 13 seasons, Devin McCourty is going in a similar career path as his brother, trying his hand at broadcasting.
Devin McCourty's retirement leaves a huge hole in the Patriots defense, finishing with a career 914 tackles, three sacks, 35 interceptions, and two touchdowns.
So I guess teams can thank the Jets for their star addition during the offseason as the reasoning for the Patriots losing a top safety.
