The Philadelphia Eagles have put together one of the best classes in the 2023 NFL Draft by a pretty healthy margin. Few teams have done as well with value and quality of players as a whole.
It seemed like the Eagles as a whole could do no wrong with their selections, but it looks like they have finally made their first mistake.
One pick doesn't define a draft or really do much to bring the class down as a whole, especially when it is a late-round pick, but Tanner McKee just doesn't make sense in Philly.
Everyone knew a quarterback was on the table for the Eagles. No one would come close to saying that Jalen Hurts' job was in danger, but you have to bring in a few options to keep the room full.
A late-rounder like McKee makes plenty of sense to round out the Eagles roster before they start their run on undrafted free agents. The issue with McKee is what he brings to the table.
In an NFL that values athleticism and improvisation outside of the pocket more than most other traits, McKee couldn't be further from the desired prototype or what the Eagles already have at home.
It would be hard to find anyone that really comes close to Hurts as a player to keep the offense running in the event of an injury, but one has to think that Philly could've gotten closer than the monolith that is McKee.
At this point, you have to trust in Howie Roseman and the rest of his staff in the front office, but it would be interesting to see the reasoning behind this pick explicitly written out when it goes against so much of what this team has already done.
