For as aggressive as the Pittsburgh Steelers have been this offseason, trading for Allen Robinson came out of left field.

The veteran wide receiver and Penn State alum is set to return to the Commonwealth for his fourth-career NFL team and third in as many seasons.

Robinson is still under contract for another two seasons, but the Steelers will get some financial relief for the upcoming season.

As part of the trade that sent Robinson to Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles Rams will take on the majority of receiver’s salary for the 2023 season. Per NFL Media's Ian Rpoport, Pittsburgh will only be on the hook for $5 million this year, while L.A. will pay the other $10 million.

Robinson had just 339 yards on 33 receptions in his lone season with the Rams. Instead of being liberated from quarterback Hell with the Chicago Bears, he entered a new nightmare out west.

The sudden downturn of Robinson's career reflects the Rams' willingness to part ways with him for the price of just a seventh-round pick, and paying for two-thirds of his salary. Los Angeles has been aggressive in freeing up cap space and stacking draft picks for the future in hopes to get back on track after winning the Super Bowl two seasons ago.

As for next year, Robinson's base salary of $10 million is non-guaranteed, and his $5.75 roster bonus is triggered on March 21. If the Steelers so desire, they can cut Robinson prior to that date next offseason and be spared over $15 million in cap space.

Now with a young quarterback on the rise, Robinson has a chance to resurrect his career before it's too late. If his play ins't up to snuff, the Steelers can get out with no cost to them next year.
