After a disappointing loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round, the Buffalo Bills have clear areas of improvement.
They need more talent in the trenches. On defense, their defensive line struggled mightily against the Bengals.
The biggest issue there is that Cincinnati was without almost all of their starters on their offensive line. The Bills couldn't generate pressure on Joe Burrow against backups. They could've blitzed more, but that plays to Burrow's strengths as a quarterback.
Accordingly, they need to at defensive line talent during this off-season.
That starts at pass rusher off the edge. 5-7 edge rushers are projected to go in the first round this April, and Buffalo could be one of the teams to snag one.
Check out three prospects who the Bills should have some interest in during the 2023 NFL Draft.
Isaiah Foskey, Notre Dame
Foskey is quite the physical specimen at defensive end for any team. At 6'5 and 360 pounds, he's got the physical traits to do a lot of good at the NFL level.
He recorded 11 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in the 2022 season for the Irish. His pass rush skills are fairly polished, and his athleticism is undeniable. He is one of the quickest defensive linemen in the entire 2023 draft.
Foskey has knack for making big plays when his team needs it most, and the Bills could use that skill on defense.
Nolan Smith, Georgia
Smith is a really intriguing prospect. He is coming off a season-ending injury and has a smaller build. The injury doesn't seem to be hurting his stock too much, though.
Most scouts believe that he will still go in the first round, and his talent proves that should be the case. Smith is an energetic leader for any football team and makes everyone around him better. As an edge rusher, he is extremely physical and violent.
Occasionally, that can backfire if he over-commits, but in most cases, Smith gets the best of his oppponent due to his aggressive nature. There are games at Georgia where he looked un-blockable for the opposing offensive line.
The Bills could use the explosive-type of rusher that Smith is on their roster.
Lukas Van Ness, Iowa
Van Ness is catching some fire from the national media right now. Some scouts believe that he could go as early as the top ten. That may be a little bit rich, but his projection is certainly exciting for the NFL. He boasts similar size to Foskey.
He spent his 2021 season playing inside on the DL, so he has tons of versatility. The Bills normally see that as a big positive in their defensive linemen.
Van Ness isn't technically the cleanest rusher, but his physical nature is undeniable. His bull rush moves are at the top of the draft class. He's got great burst for his size and a high ceiling for development.
