The Buffalo Bills went out and got their guy in CB Rasul Douglas. One of the least surprising decisions from the front office was going out and getting some help for the cornerback room. Injuries and lackluster play have been a big reason why the team needed to make the move immediately.
It wasn't only because of the injury to Tre'Davious White, who was lost for the season with an Achilles injury. Rather, it had to do with another member on the roster not living up to the expectations coming into the season: Kaiir Elam.
Elam is a former first-round pick who just hasn't seen the field much this season as he's been a healthy scratch for a majority of the team's games. For all intents and purposes, it seems like Elam is a bust.
Now, Brandon Beane opened up to the media a day after the team made the trade to land Douglas, providing the Bills Mafia with an update on Elam and his future with the team, at least for this season.
As Sal Capaccio reported, Beane discussed that Elam is dealing with a nagging ankle injury and that the team may "shut him down" putting him out of action for at least four weeks by placing him on the Injured Reserve list.
There could be some truth to Elam struggling with an ankle injury. Then again, this could all just be smoke and mirrors as the front office doesn't want to come out and say, "We failed with the first-round pick and we couldn't trade him so we're going to sit him out for a while."
Elam has an uphill battle to play meaningful minutes on this team. It appears the front office has lost a bunch of confidence in the young player as they made the decision to activate newly-acquired Josh Norman over him in their last contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
What's even more surprising is that Elam shined late last year, earning an unexpected MVP nod from the Bills Mafia after the win over the Miami Dolphins in the playoffs. Since then, Elam has had a lackluster camp and has appeared to be a liability when he's on the football field.
Buffalo is all about putting the players on the field that give them the best chance to win. Elam, being a healthy scratch, is the front office screaming that they just don't think he has what it takes.
All that's left to do is wait and see if Sean McDermott can find a way to unlock Elam's abilities. If he's unable to, Elam will continue to be a player who's discussed either being cut or traded next season.
