University of Cincinnati Health Physicians held a press conference on Thursday to provide details and updates on the status of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin.
Hamlin remains in critical condition in the ICU but recent official statements and reports indicate there has been significant improvement for Hamlin.
Both Dr. Timothy Priits and Dr. William Knight IV – Hamlin's physicians – provided detailed insight into the situation.
"It appears his neurological condition and function is intact," Dr. Timothy Pritts of UC Health stated on the press conference live streamed on social media. "We are very proud to report that."
Throughout the press conference, the UC Health physicians insisted on how the Bills' medical staff was critical to not only saving Hamlin's life but his neurological function.
They indicated it was fair to say that if things had been handled differently, the outcome could've been very different.
"He initially had a pulse on the field but lost it (surrounded by medical personnel)," detailed Dr. Knight. Hamlin had immediate bystander CPR immediately after that and defibrillation.
"(Hamlin) had a textbook resuscitation on the field," described Dr. Knight. "From immediate bystander CPR, defibrillation, airway management, and then transport to the hospital. It's critical that we do that resuscitation at the scene of a cardiac arrest."
Both physicians credited the NFL's response to the situation.
Asked if there was a pre-condition that could've led to the incident, William Knight IV, MD clarified they don't have definitive answers on that yet but are still working on it.
Hamlin's physicians indicated some of the signs of improvement included emerging from his sleep, and following commands. Hamlin still has a breathing tube in, per his physicians.
The physicians also confirmed there has been communication with Damar Hamlin through writing but he hasn't been able to speak yet.
Dr. Timothy Pritts added Hamlin even asked if the Bills had won the game.
"Yes Damar, you won. You won the game of life," was the response of Dr. Pritts of UC Health.
Asked about what's the next big step in Hamlin's situation, the doctors indicated it was for the Bills safety to start breathing on his own.
The physicians also said Hamlin is learning today about the outpouring of love and support for him across the country and around the world.
"(Damar Hamlin) expressed surprised that he had not been with the world for two days," the physicians added.
"The best outcome would be who he was before this all happened," stated Dr. Knight.
