Two consecutive tweets from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer set off very different emotions for Buffalo Bills fans.

First, Breer reported that the Bills and Kansas City Chiefs were the “only teams to have substantial trade talks” with the Arizona Cardinals for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who was released Friday. Hopkins’ contract — he was due over $19 million in 2023 — held up a trade for the Bills, per Breer.

Breer then reported that “under current circumstances” it’s unlikely that the Bills or Chiefs will sign him. It becomes a “maybe” if Hopkins’ price comes down.

Breer also noted that the Bills and Chiefs both spoke to and liked Hopkins.

Buffalo certainly could use a wide receiver like Hopkins to pair with Stefon Diggs. The Bills currently have Isaiah Coulter, Gabe Davis, Deonte Harty, Braydon Johnson, KeeSean Johnson, Dezmon Patton, Khalil Shakir, Tyrell Shavers, Trent Sherfield, Justin Shorter, Bryan Thompson and Jalen Wayne on their wide receiver depth chart along with Diggs. Hopkins has shown interest in playing with Bills QB Josh Allen, as well.

Davis and Harty would likely start alongside Diggs right now. Buffalo also has two starting-caliber tight ends in Dawson Knox and 2023 first-round pick Dalton Kincaid.

Hopkins will be 31 years old in June. He’s a five-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection but hasn’t played a full season since 2020.

Odell Beckham Jr. recently signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens. Beckham will be 31 in November and hasn’t played a full season since 2019. He also missed all of the 2022 season. So, Hopkins should receive a more substantial contract, which could scare teams like the Bills and Chiefs off.
