The Buffalo Bills are in the middle of one of the most important offseasons in recent memory.
Brandon Beane, with limited cap space, has done an above-average job navigating the free agency period. The talented Bills general manager has had a few re-structures, re-signings, and acquisitions that will hopefully make an immediate impact.
Recently, Brandon Beane opened up on the importance of protecting their star quarterback, Josh Allen.
Specifically, when speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Brandon Beane was candid about Allen taking unnecessary hits or going above and beyond.
Admittedly, he's right. Josh Allen is a unicorn in the NFL and doesn't need to go out and hurdle linebackers or stiff-arm safeties. Sometimes Allen doesn't get down when he should and it results in a brutal hit on the quarterback. However, Josh Allen's tough play is one of the reasons the Bills Mafia and the national media love him so much. It's hard, if not impossible, to tell Allen to take it down a notch, especially if he feels as though he can put the team on his back and will them to victory single-handily.
Joining the sentiment shared by Brandon Beane, slightly, Buffalo Bills legend Jim Kelly opened up on Josh Allen and what the team needs to do moving forward. His advice, however, isn't one that many seem to agree with, or at least discuss, throughout the Bills Mafia circles.
Jim Kelly was brief with his analysis, providing some insight that all of the Bills Mafia can get behind: Josh can't do everything by himself.
The hall-of-fame quarterback discussed how the team needs to find a way to get some pressure off of Josh Allen. His suggestion to do so would be to bring in a superstar running back. This decision is sure to divide the Bills Mafia in two ways.
One, many believe that Buffalo may have a budding star in James Cook. Cook, in limited snaps, showed why he should be the Bills' future RB1. In fact, Cook was only 11 carries away from leading the entire NFL in YPC.
Second, Bills Mafia knows that the team needs to protect Josh Allen by bolstering the offensive line. Allen was pressured early and often and took a beating last season. In order for the team to maintain success, they need to protect Allen and the front office appears to know that.
The idea of a Buffalo offense with a superstar running back like Derrick Henry is enticing, but it would be difficult for any substantial production with the offensive line as it currently sits.
Get offensive line help first, everything else afterward is gravy.
