The most inspiring story of the NFL’s season followed one of the scariest events to have ever taken place on a football field. Over five weeks removed from Damar Hamlin’s on-field nightmare, his Buffalo Bills teammates are raving about what makes Hamlin so special as a person.

Bills safety Jordan Poyer has been the leader of Buffalo’s defense since he arrived in 2017. When Poyer speaks, others listen.

On Friday, Poyer joined The Pat McAfee Show to share some of the characteristics that make Hamlin one of a kind.

“I’m super proud of him,” Poyer said. “Knowing the type of person that he is on and off the field, I can see how he’s been able to overcome all the obstacles and going to continue to have to overcome some obstacles throughout his life and over these last four months.”

Being a part of the same position group, not many Bills know Hamlin quite like Poyer does.

“Before everything that happened, I had been proud of him,” Poyer continued. “Not just on the field, he’s a hell of a ball player, but off the field too. He’s learning, he’s growing, he’s in the community and this is just gonna continue to propel him to be just that much greater of a person.”

Buffalo’s athletic trainer Denny Kellington applied life-saving CPR to Hamlin on the night of January 2. The NFL’s MVP voting records showed that Kellington received one vote from ESPN’s Suzy Kolber for his heroic efforts.

Plenty of good has come from Hamlin’s terrifying injury. In fact, Hamlin won the NFL Players Association’s Alan Page Community Award on Wednesday. His Chasing M’s Foundation raised over $9 million with the intention of giving back to his community.
