Friday morning kicked off with that big step according to the latest news on the situation.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Hamlin addressed the Bills via Facetime, speaking for himself and out of a breathing tube.
On Thursday, positive updates on Hamlin included the safety's ability to communicate via writing and the fact that he asked if the Bills had won the game.
First and foremost, this is great news for Damar Hamlin.
There is still a long way to go in his recovery but his story is already shaping up to be one of the best comebacks in the history of sports. And it was made possible by a "textbook" response by both teams' medical staffs, NFL protocol, and the work of UC Health Medical Center.
It also makes the inevitable fact that a football game is quickly approaching much more bearable and easy to digest. While the focus to support Damar Hamlin should remain a priority, the fact that this team can take the football field knowing their teammate is trending in the right direction makes a huge difference.
Even on Thursday's practice, players were smiling and noticeably happy about the latest updates.
