The NFL trade deadline came and went and the Buffalo Bills jumped in at the last second in a trade with the Green Bay Packers to acquire veteran cornerback and locker room leader Rasul Douglas.
Brandon Beane spoke with the media after the trade was finalized and before practice, indicating that the team wasn't done and that they were making calls in hopes of filling the defensive tackle position. Specifically, they needed some reinforcements after DaQuan Jones was injured for what is believed to be the season.
Well, Beane and the Buffalo Bills front office wasted no time and went out and got their guy. The team broke the news that they have signed DT Linval Joseph and placed Kaiir Elam on IR in a subsequent move.
Per Mike Garafolo, the deal is for one year and it's worth up to $3.72M. Just a few weeks ago, Buffalo had restructured the contract of Dion Dawkins, freeing up around $4M in cap space. Brandon Beane had his eyes on Joseph and cleared up just enough money to get the deal done.
While many won't consider it a splash, I would argue that a $3.72M signing in November for a starting-caliber player is exactly that. Buffalo went out and got a proven winner, at a position that desperately needed help, after the trade deadline, for relatively cheap. A huge win for the organization.
Joseph is a one-man wrecking crew on the defensive line and has a history of taking on multiple blockers, making the jobs of the rest of the defensive line that much easier. With Joseph on the team, Buffalo is hoping that it'll both allow some of their edge rushers to get home and stop the bleeding with teams gashing Buffalo in the middle of the field in the running game.
The veteran defensive tackle has been a dominant force throughout his long NFL career. He's played in 179 games, 170 of which he has started. He has eight forced fumbles with a touchdown, 25.5 sacks, and 664 total tackles with 56 of those being a tackle for a loss.
The two-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl champion will be a welcomed addition to the locker room as well, he's a proven leader on and off the field which is something the front office adores in their pickups.
Brandon Beane came through on his promise, and he wasted almost no time in doing so. This is a big win for the Buffalo Bills.
