The Buffalo Bills battled back from a 6-6 start to finish the year on a five-game win streak, earning the 2nd seed in the AFC.
And while it allowed them to host Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs for the first time, the result remained the same: a heartbreaking loss.
Losing in the playoffs already causes a lot of emotion, but the way it ended for the Bills will likely be on fans' minds for quite some time. Josh Allen led the Bills' offense down the field and set up a 44-yard field goal attempt for kicker Tyler Bass with 1:44 seconds left on the clock; if hit, the game would have been tied. But instead, Bass' kick was wide right, a phrase that likely causes the worst case of déjà vu for many Bills fans.
The year was 1990, and the Bills played the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. Bills kicker Scott Norwood had the opportunity to win the franchise's first-ever Super Bowl; all that stood between them was a 47-yard field goal with the Bills trailing 20-19. That kick, similar to Bass', went wide right and has been on the minds of Bills fans ever since.
And now Bills mafia and the franchise will be asking themselves "what if" all offseason long as they replay Bass' missed field goal repeatedly.
