"I don't know what we were on third down but I know it wasn't good," said Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen following a low-scoring win over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Well, the Bills were 2-of-13 on third-down attempts against a very talented and effective Jets defense that held Josh Allen and friends to 20 points after allowing less than that in their first meeting this year.

In total, the Bills had six three-and-outs on offense and their first five drives ended with a punt.

"I think we hurt ourselves early on," explained Allen when talking to reporters following the Bills' win. "Whether it be decisions or penalties here and there, just kind of put us out of funk and put us into some second and third and long situations which we have to stay out of."

Although there is a lot to be excited about, it's clear that the Bills offense remains a work in progress in Ken Dorsey's first year as offensive coordinator.

As Allen's own words suggest, this team's offensive philosophy is built on avoiding third down altogether. That's why for the last few years, the Bills have become one of the pass-happiest teams in the NFL.

That's allowed them to stay ahead of the chains consistently. In fact, entering Week 14, the Bills led the league with a 52% third-down conversion rate. Against the Jets, the Bills have converted 15%. It's safe to say Sunday was the exception when it comes to third down.

But Allen was asked about the offense's lack of rhythm over the last few games and whether or not that was a concern.

"No, we're 10-3," replied the Bills' superstar quarterback with no hesitation. "Finding ways to win football games. Just playing complimentary, smart football and you know not putting ourselves -and our defense- in bad situations."

Allen is probably right. The Bills remain one of the most efficient offenses in the league and their philosophy is to be super aggressive on early downs.

Also, considering the Jets happen to be a team that matches up quite well against them should suggest not every defense will find this kind of success against the Bills offense.
