The Buffalo Bills welcomed wide receiver Cole Beasley back on Wednesday after signing him on Tuesday. The slot specialist was back at practice wearing the Bills' colors for the first time since last season.
Both GM Brandon Beane and Beasley talked to reporters about the roster move and the details make the reunion even sweeter. As Bills Mafia will recall, Beasley didn't necessarily leave on the best of terms.
"I didn't like the way things ended here," said Beasley about his return to the Bills. "My family fell in love with Buffalo and I wanted to get back to that."
How much did he really want to come back? Well, signing with the Bills at this stage of the season was all his idea.
"Cole reached out a couple of weeks ago," revealed Bills general manager Brandon Beane. "He called and just said 'listen I know I retired, but I'm still open to playing […] I don't know if the door is closed or not but I'm interested if you're interested."
Beane added that the Bills had to figure out what was the best way to get him to the 53-man roster and how injuries complicated things. But Beasley meant his words about wanting to be with the Bills and when Beane explained he would have to be open to a practice squad, he agreed.
The wide receiver sounded very genuine in his press conference about wanting to be in Buffalo but his actions and his reaching out to Beane say more than his words on Wednesday.
Cole Beasley's role with the Bills
For those in Bills Mafia wondering what his role will look like, Beane explained Beasley would work in a rotation with Isaiah McKenzie.
"The plan at the beginning of the year was Isaiah and (Jamison) Crowder were going to split the role and Cole fills what we lost with Cowder from that standpoint."
Beasley might get back in game action as soon as this Saturday night although that remains to be confirmed. But for now, Josh Allen appears confident in the veteran's ability to do and is already claiming that chemistry between the two is already showing.
This is a solid signing by the Bills. It's basically a no-risk deal for the team and they're getting a guy that – although he's been controversial and "not perfect" on social media – still has that dog in him, as the kids say.
When Beasley announced his retirement, I wrote an article for A to Z Sports Dallas about how he retired from a career that never should've happened in the first place.
Now, he's back.
