The Buffalo Bills were able to protect their franchise QB which allowed Josh Allen to dissect the defense and help lead the team to victory. Allen had a little fun postgame, demanding that his teammates owed him some money.
During the offseason, I wrote about how important it is to protect Allen. Specifically, that the keys to success are all Allen. If the offensive line can hold up and protect him throughout the season, Buffalo will be one of the league's best teams.
With a few rocky preseason games, a rookie getting the start on the line, and some question marks surrounding Spencer Brown, our expectations were rather low. In truth, we thought it'd be more of the same as last season with Allen running for his life and making magic happen on his own.
Now, that still happens and it's beautiful, except when he turns the ball over, but the offensive line and Aaron Kromer deserve their flowers for what they've been able to accomplish in just 3 weeks.
As Sal Capaccio, Bills beat and sideline reporter, highlighted, over the last two weeks, the offensive line has faced the likes of Maxx Crosby, Chase Young, Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Montez Sweat. With all those fierce pass rushers, Kromer's offensive line has allowed 0 sacks and just 1 QB hurry.
Read that again, some of the best pass rushers in the league and the offensive line that was thought to be held together with some old whiskey and bubble gum has allowed 0 sacks and 1 QB hurry to those players.
While it may be Allen evading the pocket or scrambling out of harm's way, it doesn't matter. The offensive line has done its job protecting Allen so far this season and it's paid dividends. We are going to ignore Week 1 because it was a fluke, and because we don't want to be sad today.
The transformation of the offensive line, if they can maintain this high level of play, will continue to be one of the main talking points when looking at this team. We feel like a proud parents today.
Here's hoping Kromer can keep them moving in the right direction.
