With cutdown day rapidly approaching for all NFL teams, the Buffalo Bills could immediately bolster one of their weaker units by poaching from the Kansas City Chiefs.
The real concern at this point, before the season even begins, is that of the OT position on the team. With Brandon Shell announcing his retirement and then Tommy Doyle being lost for the season, there is a real need for depth here. Someone who could even start at the position if needed.
While there are uncertainties, especially with players being dropped from teams, Buffalo could swoop in with a player who has high upside to help fill one of the most important roster holes.
Specifically, OT Lucas Niang from the Kansas City Chiefs.
Niang was drafted in 2020 in the third round and started nine games at the RT position for the Chiefs in 2021. I spoke to AtoZ Sports Kansas City Chiefs reporter Charles Goldman about what type of player he is and what he could bring to an organization.
"Niang's biggest issue in Kansas City has been availability," Goldman told me. "The talent is certainly there, even if it doesn't always look pretty. Former Chiefs OL Kyle Long said, 'He's not a monet, but when he's right he's money.' That's been true in the preseason. With 22 snaps at LT and 15 at RT, mostly with the second team, Niang hasn't allowed a single pressure or been called for a penalty. The only reason he won't make the team is because his competition has looked just as good, if not better."
While Niang has battled with injuries even throughout his collegiate career, he has an incredibly high ceiling and would be a low-risk high-reward type addition for the Buffalo Bills.
With questions still surrounding Spencer Brown and his inability to allow Josh Allen protection, getting some depth with a high upside would be huge at this point of the offseason.
If Niang is able to stay healthy, and if the Chiefs decide to move away from him, I am banging the table for Brandon Beane to do whatever he can to claim this potential star. Buffalo unfortunately is low on the claim order, but don't be surprised if the team does bring in some reinforcements for one of the weakest positions on the roster.
Bills’ Sean McDermott confirms that OT Tommy Doyle will be out for the season
The Buffalo Bills had a scary incident unfold in their preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, it’s been confirmed that OT Tommy Doyle will miss the entire season.
