The Buffalo Bills WR Stefon Diggs had a message for the world, and the reporter who was caught on a hot mic, about his character and what it means to be in the public eye 24/7.
In case you didn't know, Buffalo Bills reporter Maddy Glab was in an unfortunate situation where a hot mic captured her joking about the superstar WR. She has since apologized for her words.
Glab provided some important context, "For context, media was waiting for players to come out for press conferences when a reporter [jokingly] told me to go get Stefon Diggs," Glab continued. "I said I don’t have control over him – Stef marches to the [beat] of his own drum and I love that about him. He has a playful relationship with our video department, so that’s why I said he probably wouldn’t say yes to me grabbing him for an interview."
To end her apology, she stated, "I should not have said what I said, and I apologize for that. Stef is not in the wrong, I am."
Most of the fanbase saw this as just good fun, the only issue apparently seemed to be with her last comment, "Dude's gonna do what he wants to do. He'll look in my face and say F you. How he treats everyone."
Now, Diggs has broken his silence in a flurry of tweets breaking down what the small moment meant to him as a person and a professional. The talented wide receiver has been thrust into the national spotlight all offseason after a sideline interaction with his franchise quarterback. Since then, it's been rumors, cryptic messaging, and some general uncertainty about his future with the team.
I previously wrote about Diggs dispelling any rumors in a recent interview with Von Miller. Additionally, I have written about Josh Allen coming to his defense as well. To put it plainly, there is no bad blood between Diggs and the organization.
Now, to Diggs' tweets.
Diggs' first tweet commented on how he felt about the audio surfacing and that he felt as if it was an attack on his character. "The audio shared was very hurtful." Diggs continued, "And was insulting to my character and how I was raised. I've always treated people how I want to be treated." The talented receiver went on to discuss how he tries to treat every employee with the utmost respect, "I greet everyone with smiles and respect. From the other people in our cafe to the people that keep our building in clean & in order."
To the media, Diggs had the following to say. "The media or fans may confuse my competitiveness that they witness on the field as who I am as a person." Discussing, perhaps, with his on-field outburst against Allen in the playoffs and the subsequent media reaction thereafter. He continued, "But off the field Id never treat anyone how she described & have never said anything remotely close to that to her."
Seemingly upset, Diggs gave a glimpse into his heart. "Idk why it was said, but this is an example of why people don't want to deal with the media. It's hard to fight the preconceived notions people have about you. Regardless of ever having a personal experience with them."
Passionately and respectfully, Diggs wants to move on from this, offering his own apology along the way. "We get you all have a job. And I respect it, but please remember I'm a human just like you." He continued, "And if I ever made you or anyone else feel like you can't approach me. I apologize."
The superstar wide receiver ended with an important note about moving forward and wanting to focus on football. "Time to lock back in… forward focused."
These people are human beings, and their every action is under a microscope. Diggs poured his heart out onto social media to give the world a glimpse of how that moment made him feel, and we respect the hell out of him for it.
We're so happy this man is in Buffalo.
