Carolina fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday.

With their roster being years away from competing, it would make sense for the Panthers to deal CMC, who will turn 27 next summer.

By the time Carolina is ready to compete again, McCaffrey will likely be exiting his prime years. They might as well try to grab as many draft picks as possible with the few assets they have.

And Buffalo would be a perfect destination.

For starters, McCaffrey is familiar with Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey (they were in Carolina together for a year) and quarterbacks coach Joe Brady (together for almost two years in Carolina). So he would fit in seamlessly.

(Buffalo has numerous connections to Carolina, including head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, but they didn't overlap with McCaffrey.)

McCaffrey has battled some injuries the last couple of years — in part because he's had to take a lot of hits due to Carolina not having many great options — but he's played in all five games for the Panthers this season.

When healthy, McCaffrey is, excuse the cliché, a swiss army knife-type player that can run the ball between the tackles or catch the ball effectively out of the backfield. He can cut and make defenders miss or he can lower his shoulder and gain precious yards after contact.

CMC would immediately become a safety valve for quarterback Josh Allen. The rest of the league likely doesn't want to see McCaffrey in a Bills uniform because it's going to mean a lot of extra work and sleepless nights for opposing defensive coordinators.

McCaffrey is one of the only superstar players the Panthers have, so they might be hesitant to trade him during the season (the crowds are already getting thin in Charlotte). But if he's dealt, the Bills certainly would make sense as the most likely destination.
