When you think back to that epic gunslinger showdown between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, it's easy to just remember the big-time throws and amazing passing offense efficiency on display. That's why that game will go down in the history books as one of the best ever.

But re-watching the instant classic Divisional Round game between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs provides a fresh reminder that the two quarterbacks can deal damage in more ways than one. Just remember that in that game alone, Allen went for 68 yards rushing while Mahomes upped him by one yard.

Like two boxers in a heavyweight championship trilogy, the Bills and the Chiefs have come to know each other pretty well. In yet another game between the two, who can create a little extra? Who can execute the right counter that hasn't been shown before? Who can lure the other into a trap?

This has – after all – gone from a rivalry to a relationship. For two straight years, the Chiefs have eliminated the Bills in the postseason. While this isn't a postseason game, it couldn't be any more meaningful for Buffalo. Everything they've done has been aimed toward beating the Chiefs. Every step of the way, Andy Reid's team has been on their minds.

Call it a rivalry, a relationship, or whatever you want. When you talk AFC Football, you know you're talking about these two teams.

One of those potential counters can be Josh Allen's legs. The guy might be the best scrambler in the NFL right now. The Bills quarterback has 19 scrambles this season, which is good for fourth-most in the league. How good has he been in them?

"Josh Allen has generated 22 EPA* on scrambles, he's been worth three touchdowns with his legs alone," said Robert Mays on The Athletic Football Show"No one else is above 18. Allen has been the best scrambler in the league."

*Flash nerd note: EPA measures how many "expected points added" a player is worth to his team based on the result of the play and the context around it (down, distance, etc).

When you consider all of his rushing attempts, Allen has the second-highest running grade by Pro Football Focus among non-running backs. The Bills' quarterback is only behind Taysom Hill.

Allen has had eight explosive run plays (10+ yards) through five games this season while averaging 6.4 yards per rush attempt. If that isn't enough for you, let me lob some stat bombs your way:

  • Allen has forced 11 missed tackles (3rd-best among quarterbacks)
  • The Bills' QB has averaged 155 yards after contact (2nd best)
  • That's good for 4.43 yards after contact per attempt (2nd best). Only three running backs have a higher mark than that.

All of this seems to be even more important in this game. The Chiefs haven't been able to generate pressure with four, so if they decide to turn up the pressure in this one, Allen could burn them with his legs.

Plus, the Bills will likely face a lot more soft coverage than in previous editions of this match-up since that's the world Kansas City has lived in so far this year.

Whatever game plan the Chiefs' defense has heading into this game, expect Josh Allen to have that counter-upper-cut ready to go with his legs. Both via designed runs and scrambles, the Bills' quarterback can be a difference-maker with more than that right overhand of his.
