The evolution of Buffalo Bills rookie running back James Cook has been a pleasure to witness over the last two months.
Cook recorded a career-high 99 yards rushing with a touchdown against the Chicago Bears on Christmas Eve.
Cook has been an incredibly efficient runner in 2022, leading the NFL with 5.8 yards per carry as it pertains to players with at least 75 rushing attempts on the season.
While Cook’s success can be attributed to the hard work needed to grow into the system, he’s had some help from one of the best offensive line’s in football. Not only is he one of the most efficient running backs in the game, but he also sits atop the NFL, averaging 2.8 yards before contact per carry.
To put that in perspective, nearly half of Cook’s average comes before a defender can even lay a hand on him.
Every year around Christmas time there are handfuls of stories about some the stars around the league buying expensive gifts for their position groups, or the guys in the trenches. Playing on a rookie deal, Cook probably can’t afford to go all out on Rolex watches, but perhaps a thank you note will suffice.
