Injuries aren’t anything the Buffalo Bills haven't already dealt with this season.
After its Thanksgiving Day clash with the Detroit Lions, the Bills are once again relying upon its roster depth.
The unit most impacted by injury has been Buffalo’s secondary. With TreDavious White making his long-awaited season debut on Turkey Day, the Bills lost another defensive back in the process.
Rookie cornerback Christian Benford has raised eyebrows after being selected in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Starting in five games this season, Benford has displayed plenty of promise.
However, Benford suffered an oblique injury in the thrilling Thanksgiving win, leading to Bills head coach Sean McDermott declaring him to be week-to-week.
White’s return certainly lessens the blow, but the Bills are in a position where they must find Benford's replacement in the meantime.
Elevating veteran cornerback Xavier Rhodes makes the most sense for Buffalo. The three-time Pro Bowler was signed on September 27 as the Bills’ secondary was dealing with a litany of injuries.
Rhodes is playing in his 10th season in the NFL and isn’t the player now that he once was. That being said, Rhodes’ experience in high-leverage moments is a valuable resource in a room that is reliant upon younger players.
He has played in just one game for the Bills this season, tallying two tackles in an outing against the Cleveland Browns. His ball skills are to be appreciated when called into action, especially against teams with depth at the receiver position.
McDermott and GM Brandon Beane deserve credit for finding adequate role players and getting them ready to play. If Rhodes is promoted, Bills Mafia should feel confident that he’ll be prepared to contribute, no matter the role he assumes.
