As the Carolina Panthers prepare for a matchup with the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9, the team attempts to prevent a repeat of some aspects of last week's contest.
Specifically, the Panthers want to ensure the team's rookie quarterback Bryce Young isn't sacked six times and hit 10. But the rookie isn't willing to place all the blame on the offensive line. He claims he has to improve himself because the number of sacks doesn't tell the complete story.
“Whenever you see however many sacks, you automatically think of: What is the line doing or not doing?" Young said Wednesday. "Some of those sacks are on me. I could do a better job of gettin’ the ball out, movin’ throughout the pocket. Some of them are coverage sacks. And, again, that’s just me makin’ sure I can do a better job of getting through reads, getting through progressions, checking the ball down when necessary."
The Panthers are in the win column, but it's hard to develop a quarterback when they are often under intense pressure. That has been the story of the Panthers season. Though the offensive line isn't the worst in the league, they haven't made life easy on Young either.
But that explanation is too simplified for the rookie quarterback. One thing he makes sure to do is take accountability.
He doesn't want to take hits. But he also isn't worried about his size playing a factor in his staying healthy. 10 quarterback hits and six sacks shouldn't be repeated in Week 9. But if they are, Young wants everyone to know they don't tell the full story.
It seems the rookie is already learning to stick up for the guys up front who try to keep him from getting hit.
